Well this weeks midweek premiership games have been very kind to Newcastle United and their supporters. Possibly the best possible set of results to help them on their European push.
After a good 1-0 home win against Norwich at the weekend the look of the following fixtures midweek posed some potential issues. However Sunderland losing to Blackburn 2-0 on Tuesday night started the ball rolling. Not only was it good to see a local rival lose a match but because it was Blackburn it made it even sweeter which leaves Sunderland still 10 points a drift of Newcastle at the moment. Then came Agent Enrique who along with Andy Carroll is still working wonders at Liverpool.
Liverpool coasting along 2-0 away to QPR and had been never looking like the result would be anything other than a Liverpool win, then collapsed in the final 13 minutes of the game and like a dog with two cocks QPR pounced on the opportunity to rifle in 3 late replies with the final nail being a mistake from Agent Enrique which led to the final goal. That great news means Liverpool who are now on a 4 game slump remain in 7th place some 5 points behind Newcastle in 6th.
Now after those two results all going Newcastle’s way you wouldn’t expect to find out that Title challengers Man City come back from 1-0 against Chelsea to win 2-1 with another late winner to not only make the run in for the title a little more exciting between them and Man Utd but leaves Chelsea only 2 points ahead of Newcastle in 5th. Then Spurs drew with Stoke which not for one second do I think Newcastle will catch Spurs up in the league but it was more the fact that it slows Stokes charge and leaves them 11th but on the same points as Sunderland so still 10 points behind Newcastle. The same goes for Arsenal against Everton, I was actually pleased that Arsenal won simply because I don’t think we will catch them so the best result was for Everton to lose and stay 10 points behind Newcastle as well.
So that leaves Sunderland Stoke and Everton on 37 points each, Liverpool on 42 and Newcastle remain with 47.
All in all a great set of results for Newcastle Supporters and a glimmer a hope still remains to get a European spot.
