As predicted in my earlier blog the early pressing was from a determined Chelsea side and that proved to be vital. Pressure, slick passing, and key finishing was the key to the day and deservedly a 2-1 win for Chelsea.
All credit to the blues today it was an enjoyable match to watch with goals in both halves and a great comeback from Liverpool which was too little too late for them. The headlines will clearly talk about the ‘was it’ , ‘wasn’t it’ goal that Andy Carroll’s effort will bring up but after reviewing it many times from many angles it was clearly a fantastic reaction save from Petr Cech. The ball at the point of impact was exactly on the line as it was palmed up onto the bar and back down in front of goal to be then cleared away. Sorry Liverpool fans but it was a great save and just wasn’t your day today.
On a plus side for Liverpool I think your finally starting to see the fruits of your labour with Andy Carroll. Arguably your best player today and looked really dangerous in the last half hour of the game. But that along with his recent good form shows next season you really could see the best out of him.
The goals of the game firstly – Enrique was beaten for pace and Ramires fired low at the near post when the keeper really should cover that. The second a clean neat finish from Drogba fired across goal and into the bottom corner looked like it had finished the game off as a competition but how Liverpool really did then turn the game around after that goal. From then whether it was Chelsea taking their foot off the gas or Liverpool turning up the heat either way it was all them after the second goal went in. A great move led to Andy Carroll collecting the ball in the box before turning one way then the next and firing high into the net to bring the game back to 2-1 and a real nail biter of a finish as the questionable header earlier mentioned was after it was 2-1 and would have made the teams level very late on so who knows it that had been either wrongly awarded in or actually just gone in without the save.. Who knows.
In the end of the day Chelsea deserved the win and well done on a fine FA cup final for 2012.
